Las Gaviotas is a unique community located in Rosarito Beach, Baja California, Mexico, approximately 45 minutes south of San Diego, California. The Las Gaviotas history is intertwined with the development of tourism in the region and the desire for a tranquil seaside escape.

In the early 1970s, a visionary named Manuel Diaz Rivera saw the potential of the area for tourism and real estate development. He purchased a large parcel of land along the Pacific coast near Rosarito Beach and began to develop what would become Las Gaviotas.  It is not clear if he knew at the time that there was an incredible surf break in front of the complex.  One that would rival some of the best iconic breaks of Southern California.

Construction began in 1970.  Las Gaviotas was designed as a gated community with a focus on providing a serene and secure environment for residents and visitors. The development included single-family homes, and townhouses, all built in the traditional Mexican architectural style with white stucco walls and red tile roofs.

One of the key features of Las Gaviotas is its emphasis on preserving the natural beauty of the surrounding environment. The community is situated on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, with stunning views of the coastline and access to a private beach. Native plants and landscaping were incorporated into the design to enhance the natural ambiance of the area.

Over the years, Las Gaviotas has become a popular destination for both vacationers and expatriates looking for a peaceful retreat away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Its proximity to the United States border, just 30 minutes south of San Diego, has made it easily accessible to visitors from Southern California and beyond.

Today, Las Gaviotas continues to thrive as a sought-after destination for those seeking relaxation, outdoor activities such as surfing and fishing, and a sense of community in a picturesque seaside setting. Its rich history and commitment to preserving the natural environment have helped it maintain its charm and appeal over the years.
